The History of Scoil Eoin Phóil
The population of Leixlip increased dramatically in the 1970’s and the existing schools were not sufficiently large enough to cope with the demand for pupil places.
The 2 old schools on Old Hill, (now Scoil Ui Dhálaigh) formally a separate boys’ and girls’ school, had closed in 1976 when Scoil Mhuire and Scoil Bhríde moved to new buildings on Green Lane. The new building was re-opened in September 1979 to cater for a growing population. On that bright September morning 8 Junior Infant classes – 275 children in all - flooded through the gates to take their places in the, as yet unnamed, co-educational school. Mrs. Flynn was the principal. Also, in that September, Pope John Paul paid his historic visit to Ireland – the first visit of a Pope to the country. In recognition of such an important occasion, the new school was named in his honour – Scoil Eoin Phóil – the school of John Paul.
The school continued to expand in the 80’s and once again, space was at a premium. Indeed, at one stage, it was necessary to lease 2 rooms in the newly built Coláiste Chiaráin. It was obvious that a bigger building was required and negotiations began with the Department of Education for the provision of a new school building to be located on Green Lane. This was finally opened in 1984. It consisted of 16 classrooms, General Purpose Hall, Staff Room, Offices and ancillary rooms.
The numbers attending the school peaked in the mid 1980’s at 542. However, with little new housing in Leixlip in the 90’s, the numbers declined. The enrolment for 2020 – 2021 is 307.
Our school motto is “Ní thosaíonn an todhcaí amárach, tosaíonn sí inniu”. The future begins today, not tomorrow.
