6th class Maths Week Report We have had a memorable, fun and active World Maths Week in 4h class. In class we studied, 2-d shapes, lines and angles. Using our Maths eyes, we explored the school grounds searching for all of the different shapes, lines and angles we could find We took pictures of them on the I-Pad as we went along. We created optical illusion shape art using just 2 colours, lots of vertical lines and many 2-d shapes. You can see our art-work outside room 11. Each night we were given, a word problem challenge to try at home. For example, see if you can solve this: Amy, Liam, Sarah and Luke meet up. Each person shakes hands with every other person once. How many handshakes are there in total? At the beginning and end of Maths lessons each day we played games, such as active skip counting, first to 23, Last pupil standing multiplication, reverse Xs and Os where the objective of the game is to lose and PIG Finally, on Mathletics, Mr. Mulcahy set us the challenge of being the top class in Europe. With thousands of other classes online, this was a big challenge! Everyone did their very best and as of the 20th of October we were ranked 1st in Ireland, 1st in Europe and 5rd in the World. We have really enjoyed Maths Week and are looking forward to next year already! In Ms Tierney’s sixth class, we have been busy doing loads of fun maths activities for Maths Week this year! We created wonderful James Rizzi inspired cityscape art pieces that focused on irregular and regular patterns and shapes.
We had loads of fun making these and used watercolour markers and water to paint the buildings. We have also set up a Rubik’s cube station in the classroom where we are currently learning to solve some of the sides of a Rubik’s cube.
We made mini maths book with important maths facts that we have covered this year and we made board games based on the different maths concepts we have been learning this year too! We can’t wait to play them throughout the year. It has been lots of fun solving dingbats, playing countdown, doing maths table quizzes, solving riddles and creating our own maths problems to solve. Happy Mid-term!
Maths Week- 4th class Ms Murray During Maths week in room 8, 4th class we had lots of fun. We did a Maths trail around the school where we had to collect and represent data. We had to identify the different registration plates on all the teacher’s cars in the carpark. We looked at the most/least popular county registration plate. We had to count the number of trees located along the front wall of our school and count the vertical lines on the front gates.
We also played Maths board games, including bingo, snakes and ladders, ipad games such as hit the button, topmarks and many more. We really enjoyed this time.
We did an online Maths quiz on 2D shapes, where we worked in our pods. This was challenging great fun.
We solved multiplication Halloween colour coding exercises. This was really enjoyable as we all love Art.
Maths Week- 3rd class In room 15 we had a very busy and enjoyable Maths week. We played some special maths team and partner games this week such as “Place Value Battle”, “Digging deep problem solving” and Shape sorter puzzles. We made Fraction Fish for art and followed our School Maths Trail on Wednesday. We completed Mathletics activities each day. We were also busy at home making our 3D shape spooky haunted house constructions!
Maths Week- 2nd class This week for Maths Week Room 13 enjoyed starting the day with some maths games like 3 in a row or looking at puzzles on the whiteboard. The children were fantastic at sharing their ideas and answering questions. The children were learning about comparing numbers and enjoyed playing a fun game on the yard. One person was appointed as the crocodile, who then had to make sure he or she was pointing in the direction of the greater number of people. This helped us learn how to use the > and < symbols in class. For homework the children made shape monsters, although many of them look very friendly! Some of the children made Haunted Castles at home. The work was SO impressive. One evening, the children got all Maths for their homework and they enjoyed some time practicing their maths, including playing on Mathletics.
Maths Week- 1st class All of the children in First Class have been very busy during Maths Week. We made pumpkin pictures using shapes and we played lots of Maths games each day. Our favourite games were Adding Bingo, Hit the Button, Place Value Basketball and giant Snakes and Ladders! We had great fun.
Senior Infants We used various 2D shapes to create images. We also used 2D shapes to make pictures. Many made houses, flowers and people. To also link in Halloween we used a pumpkin for a variety of activities; measuring the length of the pumpkin using string and comparing its to other objects, and also used pumpkin seeds to represent groups of 1-6. We also used iPads to play maths seeds games.
Math week 2021: Miss McAndrew, SET Tangrams: The fourth class students worked hard to try to use their 7 shapes to create a square. After a lot of trial and error and determination, all students successfully managed to create a square! They were all very pleased with themselves! Magic square: The children worked on a ‘magic square’. The aim of this was for the children to create a square by which the numbers in every row, column and diagonal adds up to the number 15. Shopping list: The children were given 100 fake euro to spend in Smyths!! Every child used their I-Pads to look up the Smyths website to buy whatever they wanted… the only catch was that they had to stay under their budget! Matchstick puzzles: The children had to move three matchsticks from the position they were into create two squares! This was a tricky puzzle but with some good thinking and helping each other the students soon cracked it!
